 Organic Gardening

Gardening is something dear to my heart. It is both relaxing and rewarding. There is no comparison to the quality and flavor of a perfectly ripened vegetable picked fresh right out of your own garden. An added bonus is you have the choice to use or not to use any types of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or genetically modified plants. Some types of pest control are safe and non-toxic "organic". They do the job of getting rid of pests well, without compromising your family's food.

We have a wonderful local radio show "The Dirt Doctor" put on by Howard Garrett. His show is loaded with great information about organic gardening. At his website: www.dirtdoctor.com you can find lots of useful tips on organic gardening and be steered in the right direction if you are new to gardening.

The Dirt Doctor

Please check out the video article below, Scott has a novel approach to backyard gardening that is very interesting!

Chris's Tips for The World's Easiest Garden:

1. Prepare the ground by mowing it close up, then lay a big tarp or plastic tras bags on the ground, weighted with rocks so wind doesn't blow it away. Let that sit for 2 weeks or until the plants underneath have all died. Rake it up a little afterwards.

2. Don't bother tilling, nature doesn't do it.

3. To plant, just poke holes in the ground with your finger and drop in a lot of seeds into each one. You can thin them out later. If the dirt is hard hose it all down first to make it softer.

4. Ignore watering contraptions, just hand water with a garden hose. This keeps you closer to your plants and you can prune and pick weeds while you're watering.

5. Use lawn grass clippings as mulch to help keeps the weeds out and the moisture in. Lay it on thick.

6. Who needs pesticide? Just let the fire-ants do y'er killing for you! (Texas only)

7. Enjoy your vegetables.
